las
alpujarras retreat
property
description: We open the doors to our retreat and warmly invite you to come and share this special place to revitalise your body and lift your spirit. The retreat is a guest house, an idyllic mountain hideaway, built on the site of an ancient settlement surrounded by groves of olive, almond, fruit trees and sweet smelling fig. Birdsong, the trickle of running water and the distant sound of goat bells are the only distraction as you become immersed in this timeless and silent valley.
Las Alpujarras is a wildly picturesque region dotted with dozens of mountain villages many of them little changed since Moorish times. The Sierra Nevada and Las Alpujarras are excellent places for trekking, bird watching, mountain biking and skiing.
The retreat is the perfect base from which to explore this beautiful and varied countryside. The choice is yours…simply take a short stroll down to the riverside from your doorstep or explore the delights of Las Alpujarras and beyond at your leisure.
Whether you decide to pass the day reading, swimming and lounging or shopping for local crafts and dining out in the nearby towns and villages, to help you relax and regain your equilibrium there are complementary therapists, including reflexologists and aromatherapists available upon request from the nearby town of
Orgiva.
The retreat is a 200-year-old Alpujarran farmhouse (Cortijo) built on three floors. It has been beautifully restored using many traditional methods and organic materials to recapture its natural ambience and sense of history.
On the upper floor there are two bedrooms, one twin and one double. Each room is stylishly decorated and comfortably furnished. In addition there is a lounge and adjoining sitting room (snug), for relaxation.
On the ground floor there is a dining terrace shaded by vines and a large fig tree. From here it is just a few steps down to the spring water pool with a stunning mountain vista. Above, the sun terrace spreads before a breathtaking view of the valley and the mountains beyond.
Private terraces surround the house and there is ample space to stroll in the olive groves or relax in a hammock in a secluded spot under a tree.
All the rooms give an overwhelming sense of peace and calm whilst their situation affords total privacy.
There are 2 bedrooms and a shower room. All the rooms are simply decorated in traditional Alpujarran style. Cotton bed linen and bathroom towels are provided, but not beach towels.

details:
Las Alpujarras, in Andalucia, offers countryside and mountains beyond compare. Just one hour south of Granada and under two hours from Malaga (see map) it is the perfect place from which to experience the varied delights of Southern Spain.
The house is in tune with its natural environment and is run on a sustainable system of solar energy and spring fed water. This provides ample lighting and water supply. There are no sockets for hairdryers etc… The bathroom is simply designed and well functioning with a powerful shower and constant hot water.
We prefer guests not to smoke inside the farmhouse.
Mobile phones cannot receive a signal inside the house, however a stroll within the grounds will have you well connected. Local bars are happy to recharge phones when you pop into town for a drink.
A vehicle is essential to travel to the retreat
Reviews:
"You are welcomed into a house that exudes functionalism and chic simplicity. Against the cool white and pastels of the walls, the colours of nature are bolder and brighter than ever. Shafts of light enter from all angles through rough-hewn windows. An enormous bowl of hand-picked oranges sits in a thick, carved wooden bowl, as if waiting to be painted. Furniture is minimal, such as the dark wood rocking chair and the huge chest doubling as a table".
At the slightest breeze, sheets of soft, cool linen waft between the doorways, and straw mats, traditionally used in the olive oil making process, trim the floor. Leaves and wild flowers stand in vases as scents of lavender, rosemary and pine waft through the air.
Oil from olives harvested earlier in the year is used on the slate floors, terracotta tiles and wooden beams.
"Visitors are invited throughout the year to unwind and rejuvenate - to paddle in the river at the bottom of the land and to eat under the canopy of brilliant stars."
Dolly Dhingra - The Guardian Weekend
"Las Alpujarras….retains all its original charm, skilfully distributed over three double bedrooms, simple living areas and an authentically rustic kitchen. Wind your way through the fruit trees and there's a serene freshwater pool."
Ruth Corbett - Marie Claire Magazine
