Only an hour’s drive from Salzburg and nestled beneath some of the highest peaks in Austria, St Martin Chalets is a perfect and very personal holiday retreat - featuring ten stunning, environmentally friendly chalets. The chalets and central facilities, which include sauna, recreation/cinema room and gym, were all built using locally sourced, untreated timber and 100% pure sheep's wool insulation, for which the development has received international acclaim. It is entirely self-sufficient – supplied by natural spring water, and heated and powered by a state-of-the-art vegetable oil power plant. The people behind the development – Jodi (who’s English) and her Austrian husband Herby, live on site and are always on hand when needed. They also lead regular tours around the region, both on skis and on bikes (including electrically-powered bikes for those with slightly less puff!) and can take you to all the best local produce.<br> <br> The chalets are equipped with all mod cons and each features an Austrian wood burner, for which fuel is provided every day, and a herb and vegetable garden, which guests are free to harvest. If you fancy a dip you can swim in the central pond or if you fancy a trip, you can hire both snow bikes and bikes at preferential rates. There’s a 4-bed apartment and 6-, 10- and 14-bed chalets. Bedrooms are a combination of doubles, twins and 4-bed dormitories (which are located in the loft conversions of several of our chalets – the kids love them!). All linen and towels are provided free of charge, although there is an end-of-stay cleaning charge of either €125 or €150, depending on the size of your chalet. Mid-week cleans can be arranged for €30. Pets are allowed in most of the chalets, although we reserve the right to refuse them.<br> <br> All ten of our chalets are built with natural, locally sourced materials but still incorporate all modern conveniences, including a large lounge and dining area, a fully-equipped handmade kitchen, a heated ski boot rack, three toilets and at least two bath/shower rooms, some of which are en-suite. In the lounge, every chalet is equipped with a flat screen TV and various games and DVDs (let us know if this is a requirement, as they do vary). The under-floor central heating is usually more than sufficient but the chalets are also fitted with a traditional wood fire, for which we will keep you fully supplied with fuel, in case you need a top-up.<br> <br> Wherever possible we aim for zero-carbon and zero-waste – we want to offer a truly eco-friendly skiing and alpine holiday destination, without you necessarily even knowing it! At the core of the development sits a highly efficient vegetable oil CHP unit that generates clean, green electricity and supplies all of our heating. The efficiency of this power plant is supported by sheep’s wool insulation and treble glazing (Î¼ value 0.7), which combine to give our buildings an overall Î¼ value of 0.9. If back-up electricity is needed, we use 100% certified green energy, which comes from wind, sun, water or biomass.<br> <br> As well as generating our own energy, we also operate a complete recycling system for all waste (which is actually required by local by-laws). All waste is separated and recycled, while organic waste is deposited on the resort's compost heap (and used later on our vegetable gardens!).
