property
description : Mango
Creek Lodge is a small remotely located eco lodge situated on the south
shore of Roatan in the beautiful Bay Islands of Honduras. The lodge is
secluded and only accessible by water. We have no public utilities and are
self sustaining for all of our power needs through solar and wind power
with a backup diesel generator. Our 22 acres of land include natural
landscaping with local flora and fauna and a small fresh water pond that
runs from a spring, which emerges from the jungle behind the lodge. Our
main focus is to be ecologically sensitive to our surrounding environment
while providing an atmosphere for relaxing eco holidays to include
fishing, snorkeling, kayaking, diving, hiking or just relaxing. Mango
Creek is the premier saltwater flats and fly fishing resort on Roatan,
practicing a catch and release program. We also offer kayaking in our
Hobie Mirage Sport and Adventure kayaks, which allow our guests to fish,
sightsee or snorkel by kayak. We are located on the second largest barrier
reef in the world and therefore have superb snorkeling just minutes away
from the lodge, either by kayak or boat. We also offer excursion trips to
several beautiful palm tree tropical islands or through the mangroves, all
just a short boat ride away. Scuba
diving trips can also be arranged. Additionally we have a fleet of small
day sailboats, which guests can use to cruise the harbor waters, with or
without a guide. The staff at Mango Creek Lodge, educate our guests in the local culture and environment. We provide boat tours, allowing our guests to visit and explore many of the cultural and historical sites of the Port Royal area. The staff all live locally and understand the importance of preservation and the need for biodiversity to maintain sustainability. They participate in environmental improvements through programs sponsored by the lodge. We are also a tribute to local craftsmanship having all of our furniture, woodwork and cabinets made on site by local craftsman using local materials.

The
main lodge at Mango Creek is situated on a hillside above the water and
surrounded by tropical trees and plants. The two guest rooms each have
French doors that open to a private balcony overlooking the lush grounds.
The main lodge also includes several common areas, an open-air patio and
an enclosed patio with a large lounging area. The
restaurant and bar at Mango Creek Lodge is the epicenter of the lodge’s
activities and a popular meeting place for our guests to relax or enjoy
conversation. The restaurant is built over the water providing a beautiful
setting for our home cooked meals, all prepared from scratch. Our meals
are made using fresh local produce and seafood, prepared American style
with a Caribbean flair. Our organic fruit trees and gardens also provide
bananas, mangos, papaya, peppers and herbs for the resort. Our use of
fresh and local products and bulk purchasing helps reduce packaging and
minimize emissions related to transportation. Being
an environmentally responsible lodge, our cabanas utilize composting
toilets and solar hot water with electric back up. We have designed and
situated all of our buildings to benefit from natural airflow and natural
lighting, eliminating the need for air conditioning and minimizing the
need for electric light use. We control water consumption through
equipment, inspection and education. The lodge’s fresh water supply is
on site from a natural spring and provides us with water that has been
tested and found to be purer than the local bottled water. We also capture
rainwater and store 46,000 gallons of water on site. During periods of
drought we are able to provide drinking water to the local community. In
our restaurant we wash all dishes by hand and our organic waste is
composted for use in our gardens. Our laundry and linens are air dried and
the gray water from laundry operations is used to water the flowers and
trees. Mango
Creek Lodge enforces an area of total conservation on our 22 acres,
allowing us to protect iguanas, agouti and other indigenous species. Our
flowering plants and pristine shoreline provide a natural habitat for many
species of birds. Our fly fishing programs place us in areas of highest
concern, allowing us to observe and monitor the conditions of these
sensitive areas. We have taken many actions to preserve the local habitat
such as installation of boat moorings to protect the fragile turtle grass
which provides shelter to sea life, an informal conch preserve to assist
the conch’s growth and community outreach and education regarding
sustainable processes and the need for preservation.
